In this day and age, the music scene is all about the image, and keeping up with the Joneses. I cannot stress enough how sick I am of hearing the same ol thing, time and time again, band after band. When this disc hit my desk, I wasnt sure what to expect. I had seen reviews of this on a few different 'Stoner Rock' sites, but I'm not that big on the 'Stoner Rock' sound. Not that I don't dig it, but my heart still lies in Speed Metal.
All hesitations went out the window before the first song was even over. This is not Stoner Rock, this is not Thrash, not Nu Metal, none of it. This, Ladies and Gentlemen, is ROCK AND ROLL. Music made for the sake of having a good time, nothing more, nothing less. I could name other bands who do the same, but you might draw some kind of comparison from the names, and thats not fair to the Lazerwolfs.
The disc opens with Bonfire, a crushing track if ever there was one. I kid you not..last time I played this disc was over a week ago, yet Bonfire is still swirling around in my head. That says alot, considering everything else I've played since. The riffs are easy to digest, and the chorus is hard to escape. The tune is a good opener to the disc, it gives you a great summation on what to expect the rest of the ride.
Each musician shines on his own, and when you put the 3 of them together, you've got chemistry. Drummer Bubba Warne lays alot on the cymbals, yet don't discount the rest of his kit. He's got a thunderous sound, very rich and full. This is very evident on track 3, Dissent. He also subscribes to the Tommy Lee school of drumming (yes, kids, when Tommy was white, he was a drummer), heavy on the cowbell. Personally, I like it.
The guitar and bass aren't to be overlooked either. While so many bands have dismissed guitar solos, it's nice to hear one who hasn't. The guitar here gets all over the map, from raunchy rock to blues based jams. Jimmy pulls off some really excellent solos, and memorable riffs abound on this disc. Chris lays down the basslines heavy and steady. So many times the bassist gets lost in the mix, but that doesnt happen here. These guys managed to produce themselves, and come out of it with a killer sound. Very clean, yet distorted and heavy where it counts, never losing sight of their goals.
If you called this a jam band disc, you'd be half right. They do go all out with their jams, though theres so much more. The vocal delivery catches your attention, and next thing you know, the lyrics are floating through your head. Right up til the next infectious track. I can imagine live these guys get the whole audience singing along with em.
Standout tracks include Bonfire, Big Rig, Ride, and ORT. Hell, they're all standouts. The disc is still available, so do yourself or any other Rock fans a favor and buy it.
