Lazerwolfs - Navaja Automatica
Review by John Pegoraro (StonerRock.com)
Self released
Release date: 2006
On one hand, the internet has done wonders for promoting music. All you need is a website to host your music and a knack for the non-irritating kind of self promotion and you're guaranteed some listens. On the other, there are about six million other bands doing the same exact thing.
Missoula's Lazerwolfs have opted to climb above the fray by making their sophomore album, Navaja Automatica, available for one and all through their website (at 192 kbps, which should please most audiophiles). If you're a fan of gritty, biker worthy hard rock (think American Dog) that occasionally flirts with classic metal (Iron Maiden) and early doom (Spirit Caravan), it's a hell of a deal. It's the sort of honest, no-bullshit riffage that serves as the cornerstone of every honest, no-bullshit rock band slogging it out there in the trenches. This three-piece takes it up another notch with some in the pocket playing that flashy enough to lend distinction but not so much as to be a “look at me!” type of distraction.
In short, Lazerwolfs know how to write some damn fine songs. The production's a bit too dry and mannered at times, but it didn't take away from the overall effect. Besides, it's free. What more do you want?
