"Get Mad" is the first official release from Montana's own Lazerwolfs. Funny, because I've had this disc for a while and have listened to it quite regularly, but it somehow managed to leave my rotation. After picking it up again, I'm wondering how this disc got passed over. Forget stoner rock or doom; this is a rock record, straight ahead, no bullshit with some great blues guitar by Jimmy Rolle.
"Bonfire" starts off with some great building guitar work, moving into some heavy Fu Manchu inspired riffs. Really cool actually, because the band has an amazingly clean sound, confident and content enough with their skills not to fuck up their sound with over the top studio trickery. "FOTC" is another beauty, showing that these guys not only write some truly memorable rockers, but also have enough passion and creativity to really let loose in a jam environment; Same goes with the jittery tempo-swinging "Dissent", that rocks a cowbell groove like nobody's business. But the album does not stop there.
Although they touch on the jam aspect early in the disc, it is never full realized until you hit "Elemental", a song that revolves around the improvisational skills of all three of the Lazerwolfs. Seems that this is where I find the band at its best, with Jimmy and Chris churning out some heroic blues guitar action. The band hits paydirt with "Ort" though -- one of the single greatest jams in recent memory. With "Ort", the Lazerwolfs rock like that Warren Haynes and Atomic Bitchwax collaboration: Not only with Jimmy's swooning psyche-blues guitar, but with Bubba and Chris providing a mountain support on the rhythm end.
"Get Mad" is a genuine outing, appealing to classic rock lovers and modern blues aficionados as well. Regardless of your persuasion, any fan of bona fide guitar music will surely find this a substantial addition to their collection.
