Torch - Rock in a Hard Place (USA) 08/04/2003

How does this happen? How can a band from Montana, with a minute budget and no label come up with an album that rivals the sound of the latest Metallica? Anyone who knows music knows that Metallica TRIED to sound like they were going "back to the basics", which is a joke, but if you want the real thing, pick up this one from Lazerwolfs.

They sound like the bastard child of Black Sabbath, The Smithereens, Deep Purple and a mix of some modern elements. They do have more of a groove than the legends I mentions, perhaps a bit more like Mountain at times. You could throw out all the bullshit comparisons and call them a Rock band too if it suits you.

The production is raw, but incredibly effective, and something Metallica couldn't replicate unless they recorded in the same studio with the same equipment. This is an incredibly warm and LOUD mix that sounds amazing in a car stereo or home system... as long as it's cranked of course.

Guitarist Jimmy Rolle has some great sounds coming from his amps, he's quite experimental with plethera of styles blended together. On "Dissent" he goes through a hypnotic solo that sounds like something from Iron Butterfly. The band has some "Jam" tendencies as well that are most evident in the 10 minute plus instrumental "Ort". I thought this was an EP actually until I realized the songs were much longer than the average tune.

If you are into the Stoner Rock, Hard Rock, Heavy Metal, or just good damn music, Lazerwolfs deserves a listen. It's a gem that will be treasured in any music collection.
