What makes a good rock record? That is the question we asked ourselves as we prepared to put together our debut release. We wanted 40 - 50 minutes of straightforward rock and roll heavily flavored with groove. We wanted a record we would want to buy and listen to ourselves, something that perfectly captures the essence of what rock music is to us. What we came up with is this album, Get Mad.
Get Mad is a collection of songs assembled over the course of a year. Some songs we had recorded previously as demos. Others were brand new. Some songs we recorded we ultimately didn't use because they didn't seem to fit. An album is like a sculpture; slowly bits and chunks fall away to reveal the image that the raw stone seems to promise. Sometimes the bits come away in whole pieces, other times just minor shavings. Ultimately you reach a point where you say, yeah, this is it. This is what the rock was saying to me all along. In the case of music, you finally hear in that rehearsal room what it is you've been hearing in your head all along. Something clicks. The pizza may be gone, but the beer is cold . . . and you realize that life is pretty fucking good. We thought of holding out a little longer to create more material to choose from, but ultimately we decided against it. This recording is the ultimate statement of who the Lazerwolfs are in 2002.
Lazerwolfs are first and foremost a live band. It is never easy to capture that live intensity in a recorded format, but we came pretty close. We wanted a real raw, stripped-down sound. We didn't want to fool anyone with a ton of overdubs or layers of effects we could not duplicate live. We did not want to use studio trickery to fix mistakes. Yeah, there are some warts on this recording. But there are also some moments that just happened during the process of recording in such an organic, live setting that can and never will be duplicated. When something like that happens, you don't mess with it. What you hear is what you hear when you walk into a room to hear the Lazerwolfs cut it loose live. What else is there? Nothing more, and absolutely nothing less.
