I'm in love with the notion of unpretentious rock n' roll, created only with the intention to rock. No marketing gimmicks, target markets or focus groups. Three dudes getting together to create music, unconcious of image. That's where it's at, in my book.
And it seem like Missoula, Montana's hometown heroes have finally hit their stride, leaving the inconsistancies of 2000's Gothic in the dust with songs like "Big Rig" off their brand spankin' new recordings. This is riff-rock, tried and true in a huge bear hug with NWOBHM-like metal sensibilities and the retro-groove now sound. It seems with the addition of new guitar player Jimmy Rolle (who has a smoking guitar solo and does vocals on the ultra-rocking "FOTC") was the final piece to complete the Lazerwolf jigsaw puzzle. Bassist/Vocalist Chris La Tray has never sounded more confident in his burly-man vocals, leaving his Alice Cooperisms of yore in the past. Drummer Bubba Warne is ON, working the tubs in a powerful yet tasteful manner providing the gas for the Lazerwolfs giant sound. The all come together in a hyper-spritual prayer to the Rock Gods for the instrumental "ORT" which adds proof positive that the Lazarwolfs can do more than right a catchy tune, they can jam with the best of 'em!
Special kudos go out to the excellent, EXCELLENT "Elemental", which reminds me of The Nuge's "Stranglehold" iwith it's huge riff, jam-oriented midsection, SMOKIN' slow-burn guitar solo and climatic finish. Chris, Jimmy and Bubba have been playing together since childhood, something that is hugely evident in the chemistry displayed on Get Mad. The production here (curtousy of Rolle and Hank Donovan of Bevel Studios) is exceptional for a hard rock record - If Get Mad doesn't grab ears, I'll be really surprised. A smoking release of pure riff rawk done exceptionally well.
